The work

This is nine short videos on why and how to practice Somatic Experiencing on this library. We we will some of the tools we use, explain why we use them, and even get a little moment to practice them. The tools we learn and practice in this series are :1) Orienting Outside : This is a response in nervous system to re-establish safety in a space. Orienting through sound, sight, touch, resonance and felt sense, etc. Every time we orient, we remind the nervous system where we are; if there is imminent danger, we can respond; and if not, we can relax.<ul><li>Ex: Every time my cat walks into my room, I notice him look around to make sure nothing is there he perceives as a threat. He looks at exits and windows, at furniture, my stuffies. He listens to the sounds around; my heart beat, the cars outside. He feels into the resonance between us; which gives him the information that I am calm. He then softens, looks at me for connection and decides where to sit and sleep.</li></ul>2) Listening Inside (felt sense): Just like orienting is done externally, we also orient internally — which we call felt sense. It is a sensation, like the feeling of a full belly or felt sense of tiredness. We feel something inside. <ul><li>Ex: When I am hungry, I feel my tongue salivate, there is a squeezing sensation in my belly, and something I can’t describe of insatisfaction and desire to eat.</li></ul>3) Sensation and Vocabulary : Here are put words to the sensations that we feel and make connections with our emotions. 4) Moving through a Wave : This is a fundamental tool in Somatic Experiencing! We practice feeling a sensation which can be activating and allow it to settle. Activation is a normal response to a situation, memory, sensation, etc where quick action is needed. It often (but not always) comes with a faster heartbeat, quickened breath, tense or contracted muscles, etc. It is useful to power up energy for a person to act quickly, but can appear at times which are inconvenient. Settling is a normal response to any situation, memory, sensation, etc where quick action is not needed. It often (but not always), comes with a slower heart rate, slow breath, soft muscles, etc. it is useful in allowing for rest and digest.<ul><li>Ex of Activation: When I have 2 minutes left to catch the bus, I track that my heart rate goes up and I'm ready to run down to the bus stop. But sometimes I get the same feeling before an exam, yet I can't simply run to a bus stop, I have to sit still.</li><li>Ex of Settling : I luckily caught the bus, and now I am feeling myself settling into the seat. I can feel my heart rate slow down, and my muscles become softer. I get a similar feeling with my cat.</li></ul>After this learning, we will use these tools, tied with imagination, safety and titration to explore ourselves.
